The Ultimate Guide to Wearing Your Helmet Right: Stay Safe & Look Good!

The Ultimate Guide to Wearing Your Helmet Right: Stay Safe & Look Good!

Let's be real: your helmet is the single most important piece of gear you own. Whether you're hitting the skatepark, cruising on your bike, or shredding on your new stunt scooter, that dome protector is your best friend. But just owning a helmet isn't enough—you need to know how to wear a helmet correctly.

A helmet that’s positioned wrong is almost as useless as no helmet at all. Don’t worry, getting the perfect, protective fit is quick and easy. Follow this simple helmet fit guide and ride confidently!

Step 1: Low and Level is the Goal!

The biggest mistake people make is wearing their helmet like a fedora - high up on the back of their head. This leaves your forehead exposed, which is a big no-no for head protection.

  • The Eyebrow Rule: Position your helmet horizontally (level) on your head. The front rim should sit just two fingers' width above your eyebrows.

  • Avoid the Tilt: Ensure it is perfectly horizontal. A helmet that tilts down at the back might look cool, but it increases your risk of injury during an accident. Conversely, if it’s too low on your forehead, it will obstruct your vision—which is also dangerous!

Step 2: Get That Snug Fit (No Head-Wobbling!)

Your helmet should fit snug. If it wiggles, rocks, or moves around when you shake your head, it’s too loose.

  • Customise with Padding: Most quality helmets come with different-sized internal padding. Use the provided padding to eliminate any gaps between the helmet liner and your head. This ensures a comfortable fit and maximum shock absorption.

  • Need a New Size? If you have to use the thickest padding and it's still too loose, you might need to size down. See our tip below on measuring head circumference to find your ideal size!

Step 3: Secure Those Straps (The V and the Y)

The straps are there to keep the helmet in place during an impact. Loose straps mean the helmet can shift or even fly off.

  • The Jaw Straps: Adjust the side straps so that they form a V-shape or Y-shape just below your ears. The adjustable fasteners (usually a clip or slider) should be flat against your skin.

  • The Chin Buckle: The chin strap should be securely fastened under your chin. You should be able to fit just one finger snugly between the strap and your chin. If you can fit more than one, the strap is too loose. Tighten those adjustable helmet straps!

Quick Tip: How to Measure Head Circumference

To get the right helmet size in the first place, grab a flexible measuring tape (or a piece of string).

  1. Place the tape just above your ears.

  2. Wrap it around your head so it passes directly over the middle of your eyebrows.

  3. Read the measurement. This number corresponds to the recommended size range on the helmet packaging.

Choosing the correct initial size is the foundation of excellent helmet safety tips!

Spotlighting CORE Helmets: Getting Your Best Fit

At CORE, we’re all about keeping you safe without compromising on comfort or style. Both our CORE Action Sports Helmet and CORE Street Helmet are designed with our multi-impact resistant philosophy and extended head coverage. Here’s how to make sure they fit perfectly:

CORE Action Sports Helmet

The CORE Action Sports Helmet is your go-to for durable, affordable protection. It comes with a standard 3-piece internal padding set. When you unbox it, make sure to:

  • Try on the helmet with the pre-installed padding.

  • If it feels a little loose, swap out the original padding for the second, thicker set of foam padding that comes in the box. This will help you achieve that essential snug, wobble-free fit described in Step 2.

CORE Street Helmet

Our CORE Street Helmet is an upgrade focused on enhanced comfort, breathability, and fit, featuring our special CORE Luxe Padding. These super-soft, sweat-wicking pads make a difference!

  • Just like the Action Sports Helmet, your Street Helmet includes a second set of CORE Luxe Pads in a different size. Experiment with both sets to find which one gives you the firm, comfortable, and most secure fit.

  • The Luxe Pads are designed to conform to your head while keeping you cool, so take your time to adjust them for optimal comfort and safety.

No matter which CORE helmet you choose, remember that the right fit is crucial. Spend a few minutes making those adjustments, and you'll be ready to ride with confidence!
